There was an article from Vísir last week about a raven named Byko who apparently speaks a bit of English and Icelandic, in addition to meowing like a cat. For some reason cat, bird and horse stories always seem to make it into my blog… I think The Meowing Raven would be a good name for a pub in Reykjavik, if there isn’t one already 🙂
Hrafn sem talar og mjálmar
Raven who talks and meows
Krumminn Byko er einn magnaðasti fugl landsins og jafnvel heimsins því hann talar og mjálmar eins og köttur. Hann segir meðal annars halló á ensku og íslensku.
Byko the raven is the most amazing bird in the country, and even in the world, as he can speak and meow just like a cat. Among other things he says ‘hello’ in English and Icelandic.
Both words for raven are used in the article, hrafn and krummi. I’ve still never found out if there’s any difference; they seem to be used interchangeably. I think I prefer hrafn though 🙂

„Ég er í raun og veru mamma hans og pabbi,“ segir Jóhann Helgi Hlöðversson, en hann rekur myndarlega ferðaþjónustu í Vatnsholti í Flóahreppi. „Hann er ægilega mikill karakter, er stríðinn og finnst gaman að bíta og hrekkja. Á sama tíma er hann ofboðslega ástríkur og gefandi.“
“I’m really his mother and father,” says Jóhann Helgi Hlöðversson, who runs a fine tourist service in Vatnasholt in Flóahreppur. “He is quite the character, mischievous and likes to bite and tease. At the same time he’s terribly affectionate and giving.”
Þá mjálmar hann einnig eins og köttur, en í meðfylgjandi myndskeiði má sjá þennan ótrúlega fugl.
He meows just like a cat, and in the accompanying video you can see this unbelievable bird.
The phrase í raun og veru is a way to say really, made up of raun (truth) and vera (reality).

…
This story made me think of Huginn and Muninn, Odin’s ravens from Norse mythology. The entry in the Icelandic Wikipedia is short and not too hard to follow, if you’ve never heard of them:
Huginn og Muninn voru hrafnar Óðins í norrænni goðafræði. Á hverjum degi flugu þeir um allan heim og tóku eftir öllu sem gerðist. Að kvöldi sneru þeir aftur og settust á axlir Óðins. Krunkuðu þeir þá í eyru hans og sögðu honum frá öllu sem þeir höfðu séð og heyrt þann daginn. Þannig vissi Óðinn um hvaðeina, sem gerðist.
Huginn and Muninn were Odin’s ravens in Norse mythology. Every day they would fly all over the world and take note of everything that happened. At night they would fly back and sit on Odin’s shoulders. They croaked in his ear and told him about everything they had seen and heard that day. Thus Odin knew about every little thing that happened.
