Apparently the Northern lights displays have been extra bright in Iceland recently. They are even turning off street lights in the city for a period of time to help residents see them better. The Icelandic Transport Authority wants drivers to be extra careful however, as the amazing display can be very distracting while driving, and simply pulling off the road wherever you are can be just as hazardous. So be careful out there! 🙂

Drivers, beware the Northern lights!
Samgöngustofa vill hvetja ökumenn til að gæta fyllstu varúðar og láta norðurljósin ekki draga athyglinu frá veginum og nánasta umhverfi.
The Icelandic Transport Authority advises drivers to pay close attention and not let the Northern lights distract them from the road and immediate surroundings.
Eins kom fram á Vísir fyrr í dag, er spáð miklu sjónarspili og áberandi norðurljósum á suðvesturhorninu í kvöld.
As was reported on Visir earlier, a magnificent display of Northern lights is forecast for the southwest part of the country tonight.

Í tilkynningu frá Samgöngustofu segir að algengt sé að ökumenn leggi bílum sínum við hættulega aðstæður til að horfa á ljósadýrðina, til dæmis út í vegkanti.
In a statement from the Icelandic Transport Authority is said that often drivers park their cars in dangerous locations to watch the splendor of the lights, for example on the side of the road.
„Þess eru dæmi að ferðamennirnir séu illsjáanlegir á göngu í kringum bíla. Oft virðist tilviljun ein ráða því hvar stoppað er. Gleymum ekki mikilvægi þess að gæta fyllsta öryggis þegar valinn er staður til að stöðva á og hugið vel að aðstæðum og umferð. Það á að vera hægt að tryggja það að allir komist til síns heima með óspillta og áfallalausa minningu um töfrandi ljósadýrð norðursins,“ segir í tilkynningu.
“There are examples of travellers being hard to see walking around their cars. Often they seem to have stopped somewhere by chance. Let’s not forget the importance of being careful in choosing a place to stop, and considering the surroundings and traffic. It should be possible to ensure that everyone makes it home with unspoiled and accident-free memories of the enchanting Northern lights display.”
