Hallgrimskirkja

The web site Huffington Post had an article about the 50 most unusual churches in the world, and Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík was the first on the list. Another Icelandic church in Stykkishólmur also made the list.

I don’t know if I ever thought of it as unusual, but it certainly is unique, and you immediately think Reykjavík when you see it 🙂

Hallgrímskirkja ein óvenjulegasta í heimi
Hallgrímskirkja most unusual church in the world

Hallgrímskirkja er ein óvenjulegasta kirkja í heimi. Þetta er mat bandaríska vefmiðilsins Huffington Post sem tekur saman lista yfir 50 óvenjulegustu kirkjur heimsins. Stykkishólmskirkja kemst einnig á listann. Hún situr í 30. sæti.

Hallgrímskirkja is the most unusual church in the world. This is the determination of American web site Huffington Post which compiled a list of 50 of the most unusual churches in the world. Stykkishólmskirkja also made the list. It sits at number 30.

Among other things, this article gives an example of the formation of a superlative adjective in Icelandic using óvenjulegur. In general, the comparative is formed with -(a)ri, ans the superlative with -astur. So you would have óvenjulegri meaning more unusual, and óvenjulegastur as most unusual. Also of note here is that the weak form of the adjective is used, óvenjulegasta. There are various instances where the weak form is used, like when the definite article is used, or a possessive. I think here it might be used because ein is being used similarly to the way hin would be used.
