If you’ve been in the center of Reykjavík you make have seen an antique store called Fríða Frænka. Sadly, it will be closing after 33 years of business. My wife and I went into it on our last trip – it is literally two levels packed floor to ceiling with antiques! It sounds like the owner is basically tired and just ready to make a change 🙂

Fríða Frænka er á förum úr miðbænum. Eftir þrjátíu og tveggja ára veru í Hlaðvarpanum lokar þessi gamalgróna antíkverslun við lítinn fögnuð viðskiptavina.
Fríða Frænka is leaving downtown. After a 32 year stay this time-honored antique store is closing with little celebration by its customers.
I couldn’t figure out what í Hlaðvarpanum means here – I only know hlaðvarp to mean podcast.
Verslunin var stofnuð árið 1981 og var fyrst um sinn í Ingólfsstræti en flutti svo í núverandi húsnæði við Vesturgötu. Húsið hýsti áður rakarastofu og síðan ensku verslunina um árabil.
The store was established in 1981 and was for a time on Ingólfsstræti, but moved to its present location on Vesturgata. The building previously housed a barber shop and then the English store for several years.
Síðustu þrjátíu og tvö ár hefur verslunin fest sig í sessi í miðbænum og er reglulegur viðkomustaður grúskara, fagurkera og ferðamanna. Nú er það tímabil senn á enda, því húsið hefur verið sett á sölu.
For the past 32 years the store has been a fixture in the downtown area and is a regular stop for browsers, art lovers and tourists. Now that time will soon be at an end, as the house has been put up for sale.
Ástæðan er einföld segir Anna Ringsted, eigandi verslurinnar: „Mig langar bara að breyta til og fara að létta á mér og kannski geta farið í sumarfrí eins og venjulegt fólk á venjulegum sumarleyfistíma.“
The reason is simple, says Anna Ringsted, owner of the store: “I just want to make a change and relax a bit, and perhaps be able to take a summer vacation like normal people do in summertime.”

Anna segist vera búin að sjá mörg tár síðustu daga: „Sko ég er búin að sjá mörg tár bara á nokkrum dögum og líka hjá mér náttúrulega sko. Mér fannst það eiginlega góð lýsing hjá einum vini mínum, hann sagði Anna ertu brjáluð, þetta er eins og að leggja niður bókasafnið.“
Many will surely weep at the departure of Fríða Frænka from downtown, and the decision was anything but simple. Anna says she has seen many tears the past few days: “I’ve seen many tears the past few days and naturally shed some myself. I thought the description of a friend of mine was especially good, he said Anna, you’re crazy, this is like tearing down a library.”
Alls er húsið tvö hundruð og fimmtíu fermetrar á tveimur hæðum. Framtíð hússins er með öllu óljós.
In all the store is 250 square meters on two floors. The house’s future is wholly uncertain.
If you watch the clip of the embedded video, it contains a lot of what is written in the article. One part I noticed in the interview of the owner was the question “Hvað tekur við?” – What comes next? To which the owner replies “Bara lifið, vonandi eitthvað skemmtilegt.” 🙂
