I guess when you’re busted for drug possession with intent to sell, you get pretty desperate. Trying to bribe the police was probably not the best way out however 🙂

Reyndi að múta lögreglumönnum
Tried to bribe police

Karlmaður um þrítugt hefur verið ákærður fyrir að reyna múta lögreglumönnunum sem fundu rúm 25 grömm af amfetamíni á heimili hans á Egilsstöðum. Maðurinn bauð þeim peningagreiðslur gegn því að þeir hentu amfetamíninu í Lagarfljótið og litu fram hjá því að þeir hefðu fundið fíkniefnin.

A man around 30 years old has been charged with trying to bribe police who found over 25 grams of amphetamines at his home in Egilsstadur. The man offered them money in exchange for them throwing the drugs into Lagarfljot and overlooking that they had found them.

In case it ever comes up, remember to use the dative with múta – bribery is bad enough, but bad grammar is inexcusable 😉

Málið var þingfest í Héraðsdómi Reykjavíkur í morgun. Fjórir lögreglumenn komu á heimili mannsins í byrjun desember á síðasta ári. Þar fundu þeir amfetamínið sem grunur leikur á að maðurinn hafi ætlað að selja.

The charge was filed in Reykjavik district court this morning. Four policemen went to the man’s home at the beginning of December last year. There they found amphetamines which they suspected the man intended to sell.

The phrase grunur leikur á was the main point of interest in this paragraph. There are so many expressions involving leika and its derivatives, I need to take a serious look one day.

The man tried to offer them all money in exchange for them throwing the amphetamines into Lagarfljot and letting no one know they had found the drugs. He got nothing other than a charge of drug possession and obstruction.

I really wasn’t sure about brot gegn valdstjórninni; I found a page that seemed to explain it, and it sounds like when you either threaten or try to prevent a public official from performing their duty. So in the case of police officers obstruction seemed to be the best translation.
