Click through to the RÚV story to see the video of the journalist and the bakery folks trying to get the birds out of the bakery. I don’t know how he caught it, but he manages to catch it and release it back outside 🙂
Þröstur og smyrill í eltingaleik í bakaríi
Thrush and merlin in bakery chase
Það varð uppi fótur og fit í Geirabakaríi í Borgarnesi í dag þegar svartþröstur og smyrilli flugu þar inn, í æstum eltingaleik. Svartþrösturinn flúði smyrilinn inn í bakaríið og leitaði skjóls þar en smyrillinn æddi á eftir.
There was quite a stir at Geirabakarí in Borgarnes today when a thrush and a merlin flew in, in a lively chase. The thrush fled from the merlin into the bakery and sought shelter there, but the merlin chased after.
The word eltingaleikur has its root in elta – to pursue. There is another word that differs by just one letter, eltingarleikur, which is more like hide-and-seek or tag.
I don’t know how to explain the expression það var uppi fótur og fit, but I’m glad it was in the dictionary 🙂
There’s two similar looking verbs here:

Þrösturinn faldi sig og smyrillinn beið átekta en flaug af stað um leið og svartþrösturinn hreyfði sig. Starfsfólk bakarísins ákvað síðan að skerast í leikinn en illa gekk að ná í fuglana sem voru mest uppi í rjáfri.
The thrush hid while the merlin awaited developments, but flew off as soon as the thrush moved. Bakery workers then decided to intervene, but had a hard time getting the birds, which were up in the rafters.

Karl Sigtryggsson myndatökumaður RÚV og Gísli Einarsson fréttamaður voru að drekka kaffi frammi í veitingasal bakarísins þegar lætin hófust. Þeir blönduðu sér í baráttuna og svo fór að Gísli handsamaði fuglinn uppi á bakaraofni en Karl myndaði atganginn allan á snjallsíma sinn.
RÚV photographer Karl Sigtryggsson and journalist Gísli Einarsson were drinking coffee in the front of the bakery when the commotion began. They joined in the struggle, with Gísli grabbing the bird on top of the oven, and Karl filming all the tumult on his smartphone.
The dictionary entry for oven – ofn – had many variations, including the one from the article:
bakara·ofn – oven
miðstöðvar·ofn – radiator
olíu·ofn – stove
rafmagns·ofn – electric heater
bræðslu·ofn – furnace
brennslu·ofn – kiln
Look up the first half of the compound if you don’t recognize it 🙂
