Apparently the weather has been so good in Iceland this year that haymaking has begun about two weeks earlier than usual \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

I’m not sure what the exact delineation is for sunnan\/nor\u00f0an hei\u00f0a<\/strong>, whether it’s just a generic reference to the north\/south half of the country, or if there is a geographic feature like a range or a road.<\/p>\n

The verb sl\u00e1<\/strong> has several meanings, like hit\/strike\/beat<\/em>, but here is refers to the cutting (mowing) of the grass.<\/p>\n

I used frost<\/em> here for jar\u00f0klaki<\/strong>, but it’s specifically referring to the fact that the ground wasn’t frozen over, hence the jar\u00f0-<\/strong> part.<\/p>\n

Haymaking has begun in the south as well. News site Skessuhorn<\/a> spoke with farmers in Reykholtsdalur who said they have never started as early as they are now. In Hvalfjardasveit they also began mowing on Friday. They hay has dried quickly in the warming weekend weather, so it was possible to bag it today and put it into the barn.<\/em><\/p>\n

There are two different examples of reported speech in the article using the verb segja<\/strong>. On the one hand, you have something like the straightforward “K\u00e1ri…segja a\u00f0 \u00fea\u00f0 hafi hj\u00e1lpa\u00f0…<\/strong>” – an a\u00f0<\/strong> clause with the verb (hafa<\/strong>) in the subjunctive. But there is also an example with segjast<\/strong> – the reflexive form. It is used often in cases where people are speaking about themselves, which translate into English as “he said he…<\/em>” or “they said that they…<\/em>” sentences. So instead of “hann sag\u00f0i a\u00f0 hann…<\/strong>“, which could potentially be ambiguous, you’ll find sentences like the ones in the article – “K\u00e1ri segist hefja heyskap…<\/strong>” and “[\u00deau]…s\u00f6g\u00f0ust aldrei hafa byrja\u00f0 jafn snemma…<\/strong>” This is how I understand it at least \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
