The tragic story of two left on their own had a happy ending yesterday, when a motherless foal was adopted by a mare who had lost twin foals. The orphan’s owner sought help from social media in order to find it a new mother.

Since foal is a general term that can refer to either a male or female horse, it’s not surprising that folald is neuter. Also notice the two different words that can be used to refer to an orphan. In English orphan is typically for a child that loses a parent – I don’t know of a word to describe a parent that loses a child. So einstæðingur is an interesting word, it describes the mare who lost her two foals as well as the orphaned foal, but also seems to be applicable to anyone who has no family, or is alone.

Things were looking bad for the little orphan yesterday. He was found wandering around the grounds of Skíðbakki after his mother died. Owners Guðbjörg Albertsdóttir and Rútur Pálsson knew that they had to act quickly, as the foal was only two weeks old and helpless without its mother’s milk. They took a suggestion to seek mare’s milk on Facebook. The request went out everywhere, and after several detours they were directed to horse farmer Gunnar Auðunsson in Sandgerði and his mare Tinna.

“She had given birth to two foals Monday evening but they both died,” said Gunnar.

It’s not a given that an unrelated mare and foal will bond so that she can give milk. At first she showed the new foal little affection and kicked at it. Then her motherly instincts kicked in.

“I was out here in the stable tonight, and let him drink every two hours, and towards morning the mare had become comfortable with it and everything was ok.”

The foal is considered the best looking, and Gunnar says it recovered quickly after it came to the mare. As can be seen they stay very close, and the mother protects the youngster from curious visitors. They will be together for at least the next 7-8 months at pasture. It can be said that both their tragedies had a happy ending.
