It looks like residents of Reykjavik will be allowed to keep chickens under certain circumstances, according to an article in R\u00daV. Below are a few paragraphs from the story:<\/p>\n

It will only be legal to have four chickens but no roosters. A henhouse for four chickens must be at least two square meters in size and the coop should be well inside the property line, at least three meters. Those wishing to keep chickens must also turn off the lights or keep them in the dark from 9pm until 7am to avoid any noise disturbances.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

Free range chickens will not be allowed, and owners must not allow their chicken raising to cause any disturbances to their surroundings. If a chicken escapes, the keeper must take immediate action to capture it. In the proposal is stated that if a hen is not claimed within a week, a new owner may be found for it or it may be sold. Otherwise it may be put down.<\/em><\/p>\n

I guess free range<\/em> is an ok translation…at any rate you can’t let your chickens run around \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

I’m not sure what vitja<\/strong> means here, normally it’s to check on something<\/em>, but I can’t tell if here it’s talking about somebody else finding an escaped chicken, or what.<\/p>\n\n\n

It will not be easy to obtain permission to keep chickens in crowded areas. Permission of the health department will be neccessary, and the application require written consent of the neighbors which own the adjoining properties. Those who have been found guilty of animal wefare crimes have no chance of obtaining permission to keep chickens under the proposal agreed upon.<\/em> <\/p>\n
