At the request of a fellow Icelandic learner from Seattle, I set out on a quest today to obtain a coffee mug. But not just any coffee mug, this one is being sold by the capital area police (L\u00f6greglan \u00e1 h\u00f6fu\u00f0borgarsv\u00e6\u00f0inu) and features S\u00edbrotama\u00f0urinn, a habitual criminal \/ repeat offender \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

So another opportunity to use some Icelandic! After walking all the way down Laugavegur to Snorrabraut, the next street down is where the police headquarters is. I walked in, and after waiting a bit for the people in front of me to finish (they apparently had actual problems beyond poor grammar) I walked up to the window and asked for the mugs, something along the lines of \u00c9g \u00e6tla a\u00f0 f\u00e1 tvo \u00feessa kaffibolla<\/strong>, except I think I said \u00feennan<\/strong> by mistake, and now that I think of it maybe it should be tvo af \u00feessum bollum<\/strong> or something along those lines. Anyway, I got the mugs, and the woman behind the glass seemed amused \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Back to s\u00edbrotama\u00f0urinn<\/strong>, the main thing to note is s\u00ed-<\/strong>, a prefix that in some words adds the idea of habitual<\/em> or continuous<\/em>, ever-<\/em> or always<\/em>. Some examples are:<\/p>\n

s\u00ed\u00b7felldur<\/strong> adj<\/em> – constant, continual
\ns\u00ed\u00b7aukinn<\/strong> adj<\/em> – ever-growing
\ns\u00ed\u00b7bylja<\/strong> f<\/em> – constant noise
\ns\u00ed\u00b7menntun<\/strong> f<\/em> – continuous education, life-long learning (never too late to start learning Icelandic!)<\/p>\n

And brot<\/strong> is a word with a few meanings, one of which is violation<\/em>, as in breaking a law.<\/p>\n

After a lot of walking on a cold but mercifully windless day in Reykjavik, my other small success was in ordering lunch at Fish on Sk\u00f3lav\u00f6r\u00f0ust\u00edgur…just tv\u00e6r fiskis\u00fapur<\/strong>, but for me this is progress \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
