I love when a single word takes me off on a tangent, and one word leads to another, but in hindsight the path you took makes perfect sense \ud83d\ude42 In this case it was the word logskornir<\/strong>, which came from the last sentence in a poem by Gyr\u00f0ir El\u00edasson in his book H\u00e9r vex enginn s\u00edtr\u00f3nuvi\u00f0ur<\/em>. The sentence was<\/p>\n

Allir v\u00e6ngir hafa veri\u00f0 logskornir af flugv\u00e9lunum<\/strong>
\nAll the wings have been cut off the planes<\/em><\/p>\n

Now I recognized skera<\/strong> meaning cut<\/em>, but didn’t get the log<\/strong> part. As it turns out it comes from the root for flame<\/em> or burn<\/em>, which can be seen in words like<\/p>\n

a\u00f0 loga<\/strong> – to burn
\nlogi<\/strong> – flame<\/p>\n

Now you can use a torch to weld something together or cut it apart, for which there are two verbs:<\/p>\n\n\n

Yep, it’s log-<\/strong> in front of the verbs for cut<\/em> and boil<\/em> \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Looking up the definitions in my Icelandic-Icelandic dictionary leads to more new words!<\/p>\n

So this is where this little detour led me – I’m starting to think this Icelandic dictionary game could be useful. Just pick a word, read the definition, and use a word from the definition (that you ideally don’t already know) as the next entry to look up. Stop when you’ve learned every Icelandic word \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
