Icelandic weather is crazy, and foreign travelers who don’t know any Icelandic have a bad habit of getting stranded on the roads when a wind or snow storm blows in suddenly. There are lighted signs, managed by Vegager\u00f0in<\/a>, the Icelandic Road Administration, all along the road system that update with information about current conditions. Vegager\u00f0in has decided to use the English word “CLOSED” on the signs when the roads are impassable, instead of the Icelandic equivalent, in the hope of reaching more foreign travelers and reducing the number of rescues required each year.<\/p>\n

Vegager\u00f0in has decided to make a change to their lighted signs. The change is such that instead of displaying “\u00d3F\u00c6RT” (impassable<\/em>) when such conditions arise it will display the English text “CLOSED”. In a statement from Vegager\u00f0in it was said that this change was made to better reach foreign travelers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

“There is a long history of difficulty in getting road-condition and weather information to foreign travelers. For a long time those who rent cars have been given information in an attempt to inform unfamiliar drivers about the unique Icelandic conditions. This is insufficient however when bad weather strikes. In light of this Vegager\u00f0in has decided that in the winter difficult mountain roads and\/or passenger roads will be blocked with a rail when the need arises due to it being impassable,” says the Vegager\u00f0in website.<\/em><\/p>\n
