I usually trim my beard down to a goatee in summer, but now that fall weather is finally (I think) coming to Seattle, it’s time to bring the beard back \ud83d\ude42 This story from V\u00edsir tells of a guy from Wisconsin who studied in Iceland and collected pictures of Icelandic mens’ beards. “I spent a lot of time in cafes and bars and noticed how many men were sporting the Viking look,” says photographer and student Patrick Moriearty, who maintains the blog Beards In Iceland<\/a>.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

The verb a\u00f0 ey\u00f0a<\/strong> can also mean destroy<\/em>, but here it means to spend<\/em> and takes the dative. You also see it a lot when talking about spending money (a\u00f0 ey\u00f0a peningum<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

On the site he posts pictures of bearded Icelandic men. “I asked them if I could take a picture of them, mainly the beard, and most were fine with it. Before I knew it I had a large collection of pictures that I wanted to share with the world, and that’s how I got the idea for the blog.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Moriearty, who is from Wisconsin in the United States, came to Iceland in 2012 as an exchange student and studied geography at the University of Iceland. When he came here he knew little about Iceland but became quickly enamored with the country and its people.<\/em><\/p>\n

When asked he says that Icelandic men are different from those in his hometown. “Men in Reykjavik are much more aware of fashion. They have a particular style, and compared with the other countries in Europe that I’ve visited I think Icelandic men spend the most time of all thinking about their hair and appearance. I found most peculiar how Carhartt sweaters are considered “in” in Reykjavik. In Wisconsin you only see workers, farmers and people from lower classes wearing these,” he says.<\/em><\/p>\n

Moriearty is recently returned home to Wisconsin where he is finishing his studies in geography and continues to take photographs. “I’m going to continue my blog and try to return to Iceland before long. The Brennivin is almost gone so I really need to come back soon,” he says laughing.<\/em><\/p>\n
