Icelandic adventurer Vilborg Arna Gissurardóttir reached the top of Mount Elbrus yesterday, as part of her quest to climb the so-called Seven Summits – the tallest peak on each of the seven continents. Earlier this year, Vilborg became the first Icelander to ski solo from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole. She is truly amazing!

Mount Elbrus is the highest mountain peak in Europe, 5,642 meters above sea level and situated in the Caucus Mountains, and is the second peak in the Seven Summit expedition which began in May with Vilborg’s climb of Mount McKinley. She will be climbing the highest peaks on every continent and Mount Everest itself next spring.

I’m sure it’s pretty obvious, but still interesting how Mount whatever is formed by adding -fjall as a suffix to the name of the mountain. I believe fjall appears in almost every one of its inflected forms in this article – see how many you can find 🙂

Vilborg began the climb of Elbrus on Saturday along with six other Icelandic mountain climbers, and the group climbed the mountain’s western peak. Before setting off for the summit, the group spent some time in Baskadalnum climbing the surrounding mountains with the intention of getting acclimated to the altitude for the upcoming effort.

I saw another story where the verb að venjast (accustom) was used in the same way that aðlagast is used here.

I couldn’t figure out exactly where Baskadalnum is, whether that comes from Baskadalur, or is some other place, so left it alone.

The one word that didn’t appear in the article ironically is að klífa – to climb 🙂 They just used að ganga á, another way of saying it.
