Usually you think of the fire department rescuing cats from trees, but in this case it was a raven who had gotten caught in some string and was hanging upside-down, helpless. The rescuers went up into the tree and managed to free the bird without incident. All in a day’s work for the Slökkvilið höfuðborgarsvæðisins! 🙂

The capital-area fire department took an unusual call in Þingholt in Reykjavik today.

A report had been received of a bird stuck in a tree near the old city library. It seemed that a raven had gotten tangled in a string and was hanging defenseless upside down. A bucket truck was used in the effort and the rescue went successfully, with experienced personnel on the job.

The verb að sinna takes the dative case (óvenjulegu útkalli <- óvenjulegt útkall). It seems to be used a lot in this context, of police/fire/rescue responding to a call.

I didn’t recognize hékk at first – að hanga has some interesting vowel shifts.

Also new for me was á hvolfi – upside down. It also supposedly means dead drunk 🙂

There are a lot of ways to translate körfubíll into English – also very common is cherry picker. Another possibility is basket crane. Regardless it’s an interesting combo of karfa (basket) and bíll (automobile).

Not completely sure about enda vanir menn á ferð, mainly the á ferð part, whether it might instead mean they were on their way (leaving).

Regardless, another exciting animal rescue in Reykjavík 🙂
