Iceland has been in the news a lot recently due to the resumption of whaling, but it isn’t just fishermen who are interested in these creatures. Researchers are investigating what is believed to be a hybrid species of blue and fin whale that was spotted in the waters of Skjálfandaflói.

What that might be considered a mix of blue whale and fin whale has been seen in Skjálfandaflói recently. Someone will attempt to retrieve a specimen from the whale in the coming days in order to verify whether it is in fact a hybrid.

This is not the first time this peculiar whale has been seen in Skjálfandaflói, as whale watchers in Husavik say they have seen it in the bays over the past two years. The size and color of the whale points to it being a blue whale on the move, but the dorsal fin is just like a fin whale. Gísli Víkingsson, whale specialist at the Marine Research Institute, says that it could be either a blue or a fin whale, but considering the whale’s appearance it’s tempting to conclude that it is a hybrid of the two.

“The reason we suspect this is that we have four confirmed examples of cross-breeding among fin whales and blue whales in Icelandic waters, the first time in fact being back in 1986, when we found the first one. This animal bears a certain resemblance to the other four we know of, so we suspect that this is the case of an additional one.”, says Gísli.
