I really like to study words that are similar in appearance (homonym-like), mainly because they tend to confuse me \ud83d\ude42 In this case, it’s words that have h\u00e6tt<\/strong><\/em> in them:<\/p>\n

First we have the verb a\u00f0 h\u00e6tta<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
h\u00e6tt\/a v (dat) – stop, come to an end<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/th>\npresent<\/th>\npast<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
\u00e9g<\/th>\nh\u00e6tti<\/td>\nh\u00e6tti<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\u00fe\u00fa<\/th>\nh\u00e6ttir<\/td>\nh\u00e6ttir<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\u00fea\u00f0<\/th>\nh\u00e6ttir<\/td>\nh\u00e6ttir<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
vi\u00f0<\/th>\nh\u00e6ttum<\/td>\nh\u00e6ttum<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\u00fei\u00f0<\/th>\nh\u00e6tti\u00f0<\/td>\nh\u00e6ttu\u00f0<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Next is the feminine noun h\u00e6tta<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
h\u00e6tt\/a f (-u, -ur) – danger<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/th>\nsingular<\/th>\nplural<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
nom<\/th>\nh\u00e6tta<\/td>\nh\u00e6ttur<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
acc<\/th>\nh\u00e6ttu<\/td>\nh\u00e6ttur<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
dat<\/th>\nh\u00e6ttu<\/td>\nh\u00e6ttum<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
gen<\/th>\nh\u00e6ttu<\/td>\nh\u00e6tta<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

It’s not just that the words are identical in their base form, it’s that the conjugated\/declined forms are also similar which can cause confusion. Fortunately the meaning is usually clear from the context.<\/p>\n

There’s an article from R\u00daV<\/a> from last fall that is a great example of both words in action:
\nReykingar h\u00e6ttulegri en \u00e1\u00f0ur var tali\u00f0<\/a> – Smoking More Dangerous Than Previously Thought<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The title itself contains the comparative form of the adjective
\nh\u00e6ttulegur<\/strong> – dangerous.<\/p>\n

Let’s just look at the first paragraph:
\n“Konur sem h\u00e6tta a\u00f0 reykja geta lengt l\u00edf sitt um t\u00edu \u00e1r e\u00f0a meira. Ni\u00f0urst\u00f6\u00f0ur n\u00fdrrar breskrar ranns\u00f3knar s\u00fdna a\u00f0 h\u00e6ttan sem reykingar valda er meiri en tali\u00f0 var og a\u00f0 aldrei s\u00e9 of seint a\u00f0 h\u00e6tta a\u00f0 reykja.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The first sentence has an example of the verb to stop<\/em> (a\u00f0 h\u00e6tta<\/strong>):<\/p>\n

Konur sem h\u00e6tta a\u00f0 reykja geta lengt l\u00edf sitt um t\u00edu \u00e1r e\u00f0a meira.<\/strong>
\nWomen who stop smoking can extend their lives by 10 or more years.<\/p>\n

In the second we see h\u00e6tta<\/strong> twice, each with a different meaning:<\/p>\n

Ni\u00f0urst\u00f6\u00f0ur n\u00fdrrar breskrar ranns\u00f3knar s\u00fdna a\u00f0 h\u00e6ttan sem reykingar valda er meiri en tali\u00f0 var og a\u00f0 aldrei s\u00e9 of seint a\u00f0 h\u00e6tta a\u00f0 reykja.<\/strong>
\nResults of new British research show that the danger from smoking is greater than was thought, and that it is never too late to quit.<\/p>\n

And just for fun, the word h\u00e1ttur<\/strong> has a vowel shift in its declension which allows it to join our discussion \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
