Not one of the 18 entries in this year’s children’s book competition in Iceland was worthy of consideration, according to this article in R\u00daV<\/a>. The award has been handed out every year since 1986, except for 1999 and 2005, when a similar situation arose and no prize was given. The deadline for next year’s competition is the beginning of February 2014, and authors are encouraged to prepare from now \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Let’s look at the first paragraph:<\/p>\n

“D\u00f3mnefnd \u00cdslensku barnab\u00f3kaver\u00f0launanna hefur r\u00fdnt vel \u00ed \u00feau \u00e1tj\u00e1n handrit sem b\u00e1rust \u00ed samkeppnina a\u00f0 \u00feessu sinni en \u00fe\u00f3tti ekkert \u00feeirra henta sem ver\u00f0launasaga og \u00fev\u00ed ver\u00f0a ver\u00f0launin ekki veitt \u00ed \u00e1r. \u00deessi sta\u00f0a hefur tvisvar \u00e1\u00f0ur komi\u00f0 upp.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The selection committee for the Icelandic Children’s Book Award has carefully reviewed the 18 manuscripts that were entered into the competition this time, but found none of them worthy of the award, and so it will not be given out this year. This situation has arisen twice previously”<\/em><\/p>\n

It seems to occur a lot with the preposition \u00ed<\/strong>, with the meaning of review<\/em>:

\nGagnr\u00fdnandi r\u00fdndi \u00ed myndina.<\/strong> – The critic reviewed the movie.
\nH\u00fan r\u00fdndi \u00ed pl\u00f6tu.<\/strong> – She reviewed a record (music).<\/p>\n

The verb a\u00f0 veita<\/strong> means to give<\/em> in the sense of award, grant, hand over, etc:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\nEftirlitsmyndav\u00e9lar eru v\u00ed\u00f0a \u00e1n \u00feess a\u00f0 vi\u00f0 veitum \u00feeim athygli.<\/strong> – Security cameras are everywhere without us noticing them.<\/p>\n

At the end of the paragraph you see the word for twice<\/em> – tvisvar<\/strong>. There is also a separate word for three times (thrice)<\/em> – \u00ferisvar<\/strong>. Otherwise you can use the word sinn<\/strong> in the dative (along with the number) – einu sinni<\/strong>, fj\u00f3rum sinnum<\/strong>, fimm sinnum<\/strong>, etc.<\/p>\n

The second paragraph has several interesting expressions, such as<\/p>\n

a\u00f0 undanskildum \u00e1runum 1999 og 2005<\/strong> – except for the years 1999 and 2005<\/p>\n

This is from the verb undanskilja<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Specifically in the text it is the past participle that is used, which is treated as an adjective.<\/p>\n

\u00feegar sama var upp \u00e1 teningnum og n\u00fa<\/strong> is an expression meaning when the same thing happened<\/em>, or the same outcome occurred. It features the word teningar<\/strong> – dice. So there’s the image of a throw of the dice, having the same result come up.<\/p>\n

skrifa bak vi\u00f0 eyra\u00f0<\/strong> means to take note of something, so in the sentence:<\/p>\n

“N\u00e6sti skilafrestur \u00ed samkeppnina ver\u00f0ur \u00ed byrjun febr\u00faar 2014 og eru allir \u00feeir sem luma \u00e1 handriti e\u00f0a hugmynd a\u00f0 barnab\u00f3k hvattir til a\u00f0 skrifa \u00fe\u00e1 dagsetningu \u00e1 bak vi\u00f0 eyra\u00f0 og n\u00fdta t\u00edmann vel.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The deadline for the next competition is at the beginning of February 2014, and all those with a manuscript or an idea for a children’s book tucked away somewhere are encouraged to make a note of that date and use the time well.”<\/p>\n
