Much has been written about the uniqueness of the Icelandic breed of horse. This recent article from RÚV relates more such research that concludes Icelandic horses are especially sociable compared to other breeds of horses.

Horses are among the most intelligent mammals and their social behavior is established. Research into their behaviour shows this. The Icelandic horse is considered particularly sociable and friendly.

I’m pretty sure that the Icelandic word for mammal comes from speni (teat), referring to animals whose females nurse their young with milk, the same way mammal refers to mammary.

Horses are considered social animals, and their social behavior is expressed most in two ways: hierarchy and friendship.

“We now know, there is a great amount of research into the intellectual ability of horses, they are very clever. And they recognize people and other horses – not just in one way – they recognize them by their face, smell and sound as well,” says animal behaviorist Hrefna Sigurjónsdóttir.

The verb að geta (to be able to) is probably more familiar than the noun geta (ability). One synonym is hæfileiki.

Translation of the last paragraph is left as an exercise to the reader 😛 But I’ve looked up many of the words and listed them below.
