A driver was run over by his own car in a parking garage at Höfðatorg in Reykjavik around 5:30 today.

I’m not sure if verða fyrir could also mean run over, or if that’s only verða undir, but it is also used in the second paragraph when talking about the car door hitting the driver.

The verb að verða is one of those with many uses, and appears in a lot of different expressions related to becoming or having to do something. However it can also mean having an accident, killing or dying.

The accident occurred when the driver tried to open the gate in the parking garage with his access card, but had to get out of his car in order to reach the scanner. He thought he had gotten far enough away from</del> sufficiently secured the car when he got out but the car turned out to be in reverse and started to move backwards. The driver was hit by the open car door, fell onto the ground, and his foot ended up under the left front wheel of the car. The car stopped against a nearby wall and the driver was taken to the emergency room for examination.

That second sentence was a little tricky, not sure I got it quite right, especially the ekki vildi betur til part.

The word kjallari by itself is cellar or basement, but becomes a parking garage (underground) with bíla- prefixed to it.

Don’t confuse hlið (gate) with hlíð (mountainside), or gólf (floor) with golf (golf) 🙂
