One old and good folk remedy for an ear infection is to use garlic. Garlic oil is made by crushing one clove of garlic in one tablespoon of olive oil and letting it sit for one day, or poke a hole in a garlic capsule. The oil is then put on a cotton swab, which is placed in the ear and held there for good while. This remedy has worked well with ear infections but be careful using it if there is a hole in the ear drum.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

The literal translation of garlic<\/em> in Icelandic is “white onion” – hv\u00edt<\/strong> meaning white, and laukur<\/strong> the word for onion.<\/p>\n

While not so similar as to be confusing, I thought the commonalities between the words gat<\/strong> and gata<\/strong> were interesting:<\/p>\n\n\n

It took me a while to figure out that hylki<\/strong> meant capsule<\/em>, as in a vitamin or medicinal context.<\/p>\n

So let’s have fun with ein\u00f3mettu\u00f0 fitus\u00fdra<\/strong>! If you break it down, the first part is ein<\/strong> – one, single – mono<\/em>. Next comes metta\u00f0ur<\/strong>, from the verb metta<\/strong> – to satiate or saturate. The prefix \u00f3<\/strong> negates it to give us unsaturated<\/em>. Fitus\u00fdra<\/strong> is made up of fita<\/strong> – fat<\/em> – and s\u00fdra<\/strong>, which literally means acid<\/em>.<\/p>\n
